  • Title: L'oeuvre De Gustave Tery Publie 'le Feu' Notes D'un Combattant Par Henri Barbusse, 1916
  • Description: Soldiers at the battlefront. Gustave Tery was editor and publisher of the Parisian daily newspaper 'l'Oeuvre.' He was one of the most brilliant writers of editorial opinions in France. The 'l'Oeuvre' was an independent newspaper with socialistic tendencies. It mostly contained commentary on the principal events of the day. Henri Barbusse (1874-1935) was a French writer and his best known novel was 'Le Feu.' Barbusse served in the war as a private in an infantry regiment and was cited twice for bravery. After the war he became a correspondent for the Socialist newspaper 'L'Humanite' and became an ardent pacifist. About that time he, along with others, founded the Republican Association of Former Combatants, which was largely responsible for the split in the French Socialist party resulting in the organization of the Communist party in 1920. Barbusse joined the Communist party in 1923 and died in Moscow while visiting there.

Most relate directly to the war, but some German posters date from the post-war period and illustrate events such as the rise of Bolshevism and Communism, the 1919 General Assembly election and various plebiscites. The majority of the posters were printed in the United States. Posters from Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, the Netherlands, and Russia are included as well. The posters range in style from anonymous broadsides (predominantly text) to graphically vibrant works by well-known designers.
