CD sound quality about the same as LP

Obviously for historical reasons it's important to have a set of Schnabel's Beethoven Sonatas and for his style. I already owned the EMI LP set which had an OK sound (obviously being recorded a while back) and I ordered the CDs as a back up and hoping maybe they would sound a bit cleaner and more forward, but alas they sound just about the same as the LPs. Still, a nice set to a collection, especially at this price.
