this actually is large enough for the elastic to go under the top to hold it in place. Some I've had in the past were just large enough to cover the top and the elastic just wouldn't hold (kind of like cheap fitted sheets that don't quite go under the mattress and won't stay in place) I cut out the foam pad as I have a thick felted pad that will take the heat (I sew a LOT). Am ordering another right away to have on hand--very happy with purchase
