ok shade. leave 1/4" on each side...not so much

I liked that I found a standard sidelight shade and it was pretty easy to install.. I do not like the "leave 1/4" on each side when measuring" recommendation. Why order a blackout shade if it lets so much light in around the edges? see photo.
