you won't be able to put it down

"In the center life is the word if, but don't let that keep you from living." Another fabulous novel by Rachel Scott McDaniel! I loved how she's melded the glittering, intriguing, shadowy world of 1920s Pittsburgh with equally fascinating historic city of modern day. Each timeline is rich, complex, and filled with surprises while the characters are touchable, relatable, and oh so lovely. This delightful combination of history, mystery, romance, and faith needs to be on every fiction fan's to-read list. Sophie's first person voice from the 1920s is ambitious, lively, and friendly though a bit nostalgic and heart-broken. Sterling is a brooding hero, wanting to forget the past but stuck on his love for the woman who left him. Their paths intertwine as a jewel thief runs rampant in the city and investigation leads Sterling to the theater where she works. Elise's third person voice from the present time is quirky, witty, disillusioned, and fearful. I adored Pierson so much in this story. His tender heart, unwavering loyalty to those he holds dear, and persistent pursuit of Elise are swoon-worthy. How he works tirelessly to help Elise overcome stage fright and find her birth father makes him a knight in shining armor. I received the book from the publisher and was under no obligation to post a positive comment. All opinions are my own.

Glamorous Read

I absolutely love this Doors to the Past series of stand-alone, dual timeline books. The beautiful cover captures the glitz and glamour of the 1920's while also having the mysterious aura that is woven into both stories. I enjoyed both storylines equally and found my self immersed into each. I loved the characters, the history, the under currant of romance, the mystery, and the faith that was subtle but carried importance. We can think we know what direction our lives should take but when God directs our steps it can look completely different in the end. A well written story that ticks all the boxes to keep your attention and a satisfying ending that ties up all the clues into a neat package with a big red bow. Take the time to delve into the pages and step into the past that affects the present. Well researched and great writing style. I received a complimentary copy from CelebrateLit. The honest review and opinions are my own and were not required.

Dual-Time Mystery

Two young women, a century apart, but oh, so very much alike. Both are performers, they both long to feel accepted, and they both have been in possession of the same emerald necklace. Could there be even more connections between Sophie Walters and Elise Malvern? In Spotlight and Shadow is laden with history, mystery, and romance. I enjoyed the author's notes that explain the history of Loew's Penn/Heinz Hall Theatre, the Pittsburgh landmark where Sophie and Elise both perform. I also appreciated the inspiring faith message that's woven throughout the plot. Sophia and Elise must learn to let go of their pasts, believe that they are worthy, and trust God to see them through. These two stories alternate between the 1920s and the present but Rachel Scott McDaniel ties both of them together flawlessly! I look forward to reading more of her writing and I'm also excited to read more books in the Doors to the Past series. I recommend In Spotlight and Shadow to all who enjoy Christian dual-time novels. I received a complimentary copy of this book from Barbour Publishing and was under no obligation to post a review.
