Maple syrup urine disease is an inherited disorder of metabolism in which the enzyme necessary for the breakdown of amino acids lysine, leucine and isoleucine is lacking and the person has hyperreflexia (overactive reflexes) and urine with a characteristic maple syrup odor. Treatment includes a diet low in these amino acids. Valine50 amino acid medical food is for use in the dietary management of inborn errors of metabolism such as maple syrup urine disease, and to provide specific amounts of valine unable to be achieved by dietary modification alone.
