The story kicks off when Kagome Higurashi, a 15 - year - old junior high school student, is pulled through a well on her family's shrine property and finds herself in feudal Japan, 500 years in the past. There, she meets Inuyasha, a half - demon who was sealed to a sacred tree by the priestess Kikyo 50 years prior. An accident causes Kagome to shatter the powerful Shikon Jewel, and to prevent its shards from falling into the wrong hands, she teams up with Inuyasha. Along the way, they are joined by the lecherous monk Miroku, the demon - slaying Sango, and the young fox demon Shippo. Together, they face numerous challenges, battle various demons, and encounter the evil half - demon Naraku, who schemes to obtain the Shikon Jewel for his own malevolent purposes. Through their adventures, Inuyasha and his friends grow closer, learn more about themselves, and ultimately aim to purify the Shikon Jewel and restore peace.
