Use Star San when you want to be absolutely sure there is no chance thatany organisms could spoil an expensive batch of your prize homebrew. Star San is a flavorless, odorless, no-rinse, food grade sanitizer. When used according to directions Star San will completely eliminate all microorganisms that it comes into contact with.
Star San acts quickly (5 minutes), and foams to sanitize cracks, cervices, and other "impossible" places in your equipment. Star San will leave a microscopic film on sanitized items that will continue to protect your bottles and equipment even after they have dried.
This will not effect the quality, flavor, clarity, or color of your beer or wine. Star San is a blend of phosphoric acid and 'hard' sulfonic acid (dodecylbenzenesulfonic acid). This synergistic blend provides a unique killing system that is unaffected by excessive organic soils.
Use 1oz to 5 gallons of water. It will keep in a sealed container and remain effective for several weeks.
Safe for all surfaces at recommended dilution and contact time. Environmentally friendly and safe for septic systems. It requires only 30 seconds of contact time and does not require rinsing. Unlike other no-rinse sanitizers, Star San will not contribute off-flavors at higher than recommended concentrations.
The recommended usage is one fluid ounce per 5 gallons of water. The solution can be put in a spray bottle and used as a spray-on sanitizer for glassware or other items that are needed in a hurry. The foam is just as effective as immersion in the solution. Also, the surfactant used in Star San will not affect the head retention of beer like those used in detergents.
A solution of Star San has a long usage life and an open bucket of it will remain active for several days. Keeping a solution of Star San in a closed container will increase its shelf life. The viability of the solution can be judged by its clarity; and that that the PH is less then 3.5 it turns cloudy as the viability diminishes.
It is also interesting that once the PH goes above 3.5 it actually becomes food for your yeast!
A high foaming, acid anionic, non-rinse sanitizer.
One thing that puts some people off is that it foams excessively, but "don't fear the foam" it is an effective sanitizer, too.
Star San is an acid-based sanitizer that works well on all types of surfaces, and it’s odorless and flavorless. You can also store it to use again later, but it can be hard to tell whether it’s still active. It usually turns cloudy when it loses effectiveness, but hard water can make it cloudy from the beginning.
