A step away from the expected British crime/mystery/drama, having nostalgic live jazz %26 ruggedly beautiful far north English landscapes woven into the complex storylines. Deals with somewhat uncomfortable but familiar situations that offset the questionable reality of the placement %26 procedures of a retired but talented former detective with past personal traumas %26 relationships. Unfolding characters are well acted. Discrete violence. Crafty suspense saves conclusions for the end of the episode. If you have trouble with rather heavy Brit accents, use subtitles as backup. With PBS fading away, the two seasons are in demand by their fans. Great entertainment!
