The Complaint of Peace, although the most important essay by Erasmus in behalf of international justice and peace, was not his only nor his first impeachment of the war system. He discussed the same subject in his pane gyric to Philip, Duke of Burgundy, at Brussels, in I 504, and repeatedly afterwards. It is a thing, to be remembered that it was from the same land in which, at The Hague, the Parliament of Man was in our own time to hold its first memorable sessions for the definite inauguration of the organization of the world, that the first conspicuous and well-considered plea came for the supplanting of the war system Of nations by the methods of reason.
