- 1944 was a busy year for Eddie Condon with the start of his legendary Town Hall concerts and the growing popularity of Chicago jazz. Among his projects at that time were recording selections for radio transcriptions, music made specifically to be played over the air (as opposed to being sold to the general public). Two sessions (complete with alternate takes and breakdowns) are released on this CD and it finds the all-stars in spirited form. As many as 11 musicians play together at a time and Condon drew his talent from this lineup: cornetist Bobby Hackett and Muggsy Spanier, trumpeters Billy Butterfield, Max Kaminsky, and Hot Lips Page, trombonists Benny Morton and Lou McGarity, clarinetists Pee Wee Russell and Edmond Hall, Ernie Caceres on baritone or clarinet, pianists Gene Schroeder and Jess Stacy, bassist Bob Haggart, drummers George Wettling and Joe Grauso and vocals from Lee Wiley, Liza Morrow and Hot Lips Page. This hot music is easily recommended to Dixieland and small-group swing fans. ~ Scott Yanow, Rovi
