Not sure

I used this on stained wood that needed to be painted. I'm not sure it even did anything. I never had anything appear to come off on my rag (I followed the directions and rubbed in a circular motion). I applied primer after and then painted. The surface was fine BUT then I skipped the liquid sandpaper and just applied primer, then painted. The surface was also fine and I was able to skip a step. Not sure if the product was old or what. It was shaken well.
