The updated version is not as good. Too small.

I can't find my previous purchase to verify that this "updated version" is the official followup of the previous one I had bought in the past (I guess they delisted it?) but I'm almost completely certain they at the very least came out of the same factory. There are two major changes from the previous model. First, this one is much smaller. Second, they've removed the volume /- and mute buttons. The second regression is less bad. You can still adjust the volume in software, it's just that you have to actually go through the menu to do so instead of tapping a button right on the speaker. That seems like a silly regression to me. If they were experiencing problems with the buttons (they used a weird mechanism I've never seen before) they could have implemented generic standard buttons instead rather than removing them entirely. The second regression is much more bad. The reduced inner area means less total volume for the speakers to work with inside. The original wasn't exactly going to fool you into thinking it had a subwoofer, but it definitely had much better lows than this one has. Which is too bad because, for 1.5" drivers, these seem fairly beefy. It seems to even reduce the mids a bit along the way, so it has absolutely lost something. More specifically they probably had to apply reduction in the chip itself (a very simplified equalizer most likely) to actually reduce lower frequencies to keep it from clipping and distorting. As a side note, it's too bad companies never took up using methods like dampening materials, fiberglass, etc inside interiors of devices like these as that could open up more potential. All that said, I still give it three stars because the frequencies it does well at least are pretty clear and accurate.
