A few words on this movie. When I first saw this, it was playing at the theater near my school in Georgetown, KY. I thought it was cool. The story behind the movie makes it that much better. The bonus disc on this blu ray isn't that great, honestly I hoped for more in depth interviews, but I suppose that is the mystique around this movie. It's been two years or so and the smoke has cleared..I still like watching it. I'm not even a fan of low budget cinema, I just had to see this because my friend was following the movie makers online and it caught my interest. The picture is good, but the sound leaves a lot to be desired (especially in a quasi-fantasy movie). Is it the greatest thing ever? No. Do not think you are in for a $250 million dollar extravaganza here. Are there mistakes? Of course. The level of ambition on display is really what keeps this movie rolling. Everybody loves the story of a director making a seemingly impossible roll of the dice and succeeding. Then again, the level of hatred the movie stirred up is more proof that it was having an impact - albeit slow impact. The problem with the negative reviews was that it propelled even more people to go see it at the time, which only caused it to do better. Better the Devil You Know was a flame that refused to be smothered from city to city. Which means, the critics were determined not to like this...the movie was better than they thought, so they just got angry because it was supposed to be "not good." After watching the interviews with the director, it seems all the more intelligent for having done it this way. In online interviews, Augustine seems to be completely aware of the mistakes in this film, but suggests that it's the spirit that makes the movie what it is. There's a level of purity and innocence to the movie that seems genuine, because like the director says "it has a hand crafted feel to it, it's not a mindless product." That's what keeps people like me watching it despite it's shortcomings. This wasn't simply a product churned out for a buck, it was pure desire.
