Inspiring, but not for the faint-of-heart.

This movie is a great story about Ip Man, the man who founded a new branch of martial arts in China. His courage and confident, compassionate personality are inspiring. The movie is rated R for graphic violence. The violence is not gratuitous but (IMHO) intended to show the seriousness of what is happening. Not for children or those who dislike violence, but a good watch. I bought all three movies in the series. (This is the first in the series.) The second is also good, haven't seen the third yet. Note that movie is filmed with Chinese dialog and English subtitles. Not the best for viewing, but wasn't a problem for me or my family.

As much a film as a kung-fu film

Given the veneration this mentor of Bruce Lee receives, the likelihood that a film about him would drift into kung-fu flights of fancy is very high. Instead, the filmmakers chose to go dark and gritty, focusing on the occupation by Japan and attempts to crush the Chinese spirit. The action is as good as any, but grounded in reality. Probably Donnie Yen's best overall work.
