Great Addition for my Garage Upgrade

I have been using Gladiator gear panels in my garage for several years. I appreciate the ease of installation and the flexibility that using them provides my garage organization. I wish I had started with the 8' panels from the start, so that my expanded installation would have been a little more seamless, but all in all I am pleased with my extension the Gearwall Panels. I addded more panels to the top so that I could hang a pair of 30" deep Gladiator shelves above my existing Gladiator shelves. This has given me almost 20 square feet of additional storage capacity in my garage. Perfect for camping gear. The Gearwall system is very robust and sturdy.

Critical of Hardware

I have no issue with the panels. The real issue is the cheap screw hardware used to install the panels. They are not strong enough to drive into the panel, drywall and studs. The heads are soft and strip. Had to revert to using construction screws.

best slat wall

There are a variety of wall hanging systems. WARNING: You cannot assume BTW that accessories are interchangeable among wall systems. The slat wall you see in stores is heavy and has narrow channels, Unless you live in a big city, it is hard to buy 1 or 2 4x8 panels. These 1 foot wide 8 feet long tongue & groove panels are light, easy to use, and easy to install. The accessories attach easily. Plan on 28 screws per 1x8 panel. The factory recommendation is #8 1.25"-2" flat head deck screws. I used #12 2.5" stainless screws since I was mounting on treated wood studs. The tongue & groove seemed to fit better when I slid the top panel back & forth sideways (vice tapping with a rubber mallet). An easy way to start the first panel is to mount a straight, level board, then simply set the first panel on it. Since these are marketed to DIY, I'd recommend the instructions address common wall problems (e.g. wall not straight, studs not even, etc.). For example, position your first panel on the floor where you want it to go, then check stud locations. You may want to put in sister studs in corners or at panel ends.
