  • One of the few remaining recording eras that hasn't been plundered for reissue gold by major labels, the '20s still possess a wealth of records that have yet to make their CD debut. That list was pared down slightly by ASV/Living Era's The Roaring Twenties: When My Baby Smiles at Me (another in the label's Hits Of series), which reissues two dozen popular sides from the single year 1920. It opens with three of the year's (and the decade's) biggest: "Dardanella" by Ben Selvin, "Swanee" by Al Jolson, and "Whispering" by Paul Whiteman. The rest of the selections are much more intriguing (and obscure), ranging from several for the unjustly forgotten Tin Pan Alley patriarch Billy Murray to a rarely heard version of "The St. Louis Blues" by nostalgia specialist Marion Harris. Elsewhere, quintessentially '20s performers Eddie Cantor, Vaughn DeLeath, the Original Dixieland Band, and Frank Crumit are given space. ~ John Bush, Rovi
