To be honest I rather wish dextrose could be purchased at lower prices due to widespread availability. For those of us who are either diabetic or pre-diabetic, this form of sugar is essential (since biochemically it has none of the fructose that is found in all sucrose/cane sugar). Perfect for cooking, baking, and anything that requires the pure, "good stuff"! :-D

The best sweetener

You know how they always say that white bread or a baked potato has a higher glycemic index than table sugar? It is true, but that misses the point. Since we are so efficient at turning starch in to glucose, using glucose as a sweetener is about the same as adding starch. If you have good blood sugar control, then extra glucose is easy to handle. The real problem in sugar is the fructose. People aren't built to handle more fructose than would be in a stomach full of fruit, and that would be with all that fiber, too. Fructose has a low glycemic index, but that is just focused on the short term. Excess fructose causes insulin resistance, which is the real problem. Agave syrup is a really bad idea since it is pure fructose. Of course, if you already have blood sugar issues, then all sugars, as well as starch, are a bad idea. If you use it in baking, it does brown faster, so you need to adjust the recipe.
