Nitrates are common in rural areas and originate from fertilizers, septic systems, & animal manure. The most common problem of nitrates is methemoglobinemia, or "blue baby" syndrome. Methemoglobinemia is occurs when the body converts nitrates in the water into nitrites, and elevated nitrite levels result in a decrease in the oxygen carrying abilities of the blood, depriving the body of needed oxygen. In most cases the average adult is able to process the nitrates correctly, however, some individuals, infants and pregnant women in particular, are susceptible to methemoglobinemia, and exposure to nitrates can result in long term damage.

To elimiate this problem, nitrate/nitrite filters use a specialize ion exchange resin that targets the ions of nitrates and nitrites specifically, exchanging them for harmless sodium ions. This provides safe drinking water and ensures peace of mind, particularly in homes with small children.
