It was established in 1975 and consists of 45 officers and 215 enlisted personnel who operate and maintain ten Sikorsky SH-60B Seahawk helicopters. In 1992, HSM-37 became the first U.S. Navy helicopter squadron to transition from the SH-2F Seasprite to the SH-60B, which is a part of the Light Airborne Multi-Purpose System (LAMPS) MK III. In 2014, the squadron began using the MH-60R, the Navy's next-generation submarine hunter and anti-surface warfare helicopter. The primary missions of HSM-37's LAMPS MK III helicopters are surface warfare (SUW) and undersea warfare (USW), which involve using AGM-114 Hellfire missiles and MK-46/50 torpedoes. The squadron also performs secondary missions such as search and rescue, medical evacuation, vertical replenishment, naval surface fire support, and communication relay. HSM-37 has deployed more than 100 LAMPS detachments around the globe and provides helicopter services to ships in the Middle Pacific region. It has a strong record of excellence, with multiple unit awards including two Meritorious Unit Commendations, eight Battle Efficiency awards, three CNO Aviation Safety awards, and seven HSMWINGPAC Top Torpedo awards. HSM-37 has also achieved a 70% retention rate, earning the COMPACFLT Retention Excellence award.
