Daniel Craig is his own James Bond, not Sean Connery, Roger Moore, Pierce Brosnan, etc. The movie is a spin-off from the original remake of Casino Royale, which was the first one featuring Daniel Craig. The first movie follows Ian Fleming's original book perfectly. Quantum of Solace is a very good extension to the Craig's first appearance. Highly recommended for Bond aficionados.

This movie is good, but it would be best if you see Casino Royale beforehand. Otherwise, you will be asking yourself what's the correlation between the characters (other than Daniel Craig and Dame Judi Dench) and Bond's obsession with his ex-girlfriend. The most interesting point that's being made in this film is that Bond is not interested in the female lead character. Bond is clearly more focused on revenge and righting the wrongs from the previous film. Continuing with the motif of CR Bond has no gadgets and merely uses his wits to thwart the villains in this film. The ending is not as fantastic as some of the other Bond films so this is a very story-driven piece.
