Canon Close-up Lenses are for quick and easy close-up photography. The close-up lens is screwed on to the front of a lens like a filter. Close-up lenses 500D has two achromatic elements (the 250D lens also) to correct chromatic aberrations. It does not degrade the high optical performance of EF lenses. Close-up lens 500 has only one element. The 500D is optimized for lenses of 70-300mm.

Didn't really work well for me.
I got this as a cheaper way to do macro photos. I put it on a telephoto lens. I found it to be very heavy so much my hand bothered me after just 15min. of trying it out. It was on the end of a telephoto so the weight fell pretty hard forward. It was almost impossible to focus on anything so I returned it. I got the Canon 35mm macro lens and I'm glad I did. Yea a couple hundred more but light as a feather and great close ups. Pretty easy to focus (I'm a newbie) although at extreme closeups movement can throw you out of focus. Took it out for the first time yesterday so more practice needed for macro photography. Conclusion get the macro lens, you'll be glad you did.
