The real problem is this unit uses cold water. It does not transmit water into the air as well as a steam humidifier does. With the temperatures outside around zero, the gas furnace here does require something more efficient. On the plus side, with water here at one of the highest hard waters in the state, this unit does work better than a steam humidifier would. A standard time is between 4 and 6 hours per gallon of water.
