What is a banned book?
Books get banned when they're removed from bookstores, reading lists, and libraries because their themes or content are deemed objectionable. Private citizens, groups, organizations, and government officials can challenge a book, or attempt to restrict or remove it, if the material is unsuitable for its intended age group, contains offensive language, or has sexually explicit content. Challenges are typically made with good intentions to protect readers from information that might be too advanced or difficult.
Should I allow my child to read a banned book?
Many libraries, schools, and parents disagree with some of the titles of books that have been banned. Many famous books have been challenged in the past. Many advocates will tell you that even if there's potty humor or foul language, there's more to the book than just that and material that's edgy today may be a classic in the near future. But ultimately, parents should decide what they're comfortable with their kids reading and go from there.
How do I take care of books after I buy them?
Books, paperback books in particular, are pretty easy to take care of, but need a little TLC occasionally. Avoid storing them somewhere exposed to direct sunlight, where the ultraviolet light can discolor the covers and damage the paper. Try to be gentle with the spine, which can crack and deteriorate with heavy use. Also, you might consider dusting your books occasionally by vacuuming over them with a soft brush attachment or wiping over the covers and edges with a soft cloth.
