The three volt CR2032, also called a lithium coin-cell battery, supplies power in many different devices, including watches, calculators, car key fobs, garage door openers, pet collars, LED lights, medical devices, fitness trackers, and toys.
How long should a CR2032 battery last?
The expected lifespan for a CR2032 battery in storage is approximately 10 years under normal conditions. Once the battery is in use, many factors, including the frequency of use, climate conditions, metal quality, and physical damage, determine how long it will remain in service. A battery in a car key fob with intermittent use will last up to five years, but one in a Bluetooth® tracking tag with constant use will only work for one year. CR2032 batteries are not rechargeable.
What is a bitterant coating on batteries?
A bitterant coating is a safety feature on some batteries designed to discourage children from swallowing the battery. If put into the mouth, the coating reacts with saliva to produce a bitter taste to prompt a child to spit it out. Some coin batteries have this coating on the negative side of the battery. Check the label of the product for an indication of child-secure packaging with a bitter coating.
