Type: For your existing open fireplace, add a log set. This is a good option if your top priority is aesthetics. Install a built-in gas fireplace from scratch or choose an insert to replace an older unit. These two produce reliable and radiant heat.

Vented vs. vent free: Vent-free gas fireplaces can be placed wherever you prefer, whereas you're restricted with vented fireplaces. A direct vent is the safest form of vented indoor fireplace, and it burns at an efficiency of about 70 to 85 percent. B-vent fireplaces tend to be more decorative without generating as much heat, with 50 percent efficiency.

Natural gas vs. propane: When you have natural gas connected to your home, this fuel type burns cleanly and makes your fire look more natural. With no natural gas connection, choose propane, which burns just as efficiently.
