Garbage disposals offer an easy way to dispose of leftover food.
When shopping for a garbage disposal, there are a number of factors to consider. If your home has a septic tank, you'll need to make sure that it can handle the disposal's contents. To prevent your tank from getting backed up, you can often buy a cartridge containing a natural microorganism that breaks down food more quickly.
Also consider whether to get a disposal with an electrical cord or one that must be hardwired. If you have an outlet near your sink, a cord is generally simpler, and it will allow you to disconnect the disposal easily.
Third, decide what size motor will work best for you. A garbage disposal with a 1/3 horsepower motor will generally suffice for soft fruits and vegetables, but you may want a 1/2, 3/4 or even 1 horsepower motor for harder items. Note that disposals with more powerful motors tend to take up more space.
Finally, consider whether you want a continuous feed garbage disposal or a batch feed garbage disposal. Continuous feed disposals have an open mouth that grinds up the food when the disposal is turned on, while batch feed disposals have a chamber with a lid that must be closed before the disposal is activated. This functions as a safety feature.
