Retinol A

Many skin care products contain retinol A, which is a type of vitamin A. Research has shown that retinol A has properties that help improve skin tone and appearance. Some retinol A products are available only by prescription, but weaker formulations are also available over-the-counter.

Percentages of retinol A in skin care products:

• Up to 0.01 percent: Some skin care products may contain a up to 0.01 percent retinol A, which is considered low strength. At this strength, retinol A can reduce appearance of pore size and some signs of aging.
• 0.04 and 0.1 percent: Lotions, creams, and serums with a moderate strength of retinol A can produce faster results for reducing signs of environmental damage and thinning skin.
• 0.5 and 1 percent: Products with a higher concentration generally work the fastest to equalize skin tone and fade the appearance of wrinkles.
