This is a handy tool for any home owner to have in their carpentry box. Swanson makes it square

This is just like a normally speed square, but bigger! It’s definitely the new most versatile tool that I own. I probably use this took more than any other tool that I have. I also use it on almost every project that I work on with a ton of different materials. 
I have been doing a lot of wood work lately and having a bigger version of a speed square really expands the range of things I can build. I love it. 
You can also use it for many other things obviously. It works great no mater what kind of material you are using. You can line it up, measure it, and make something great even out of metal. 
It’s got a ton a useful feature like the ruler. The slot, and my favorite thing about it is the lip on one of the edges. It lets you hang it on the top of a piece of wood, or let’s you slide it across whatever you are working on.

even more useful than a normal speed square

I grabbed up the 12 inch Swanson square.
The square is nice quality and comes with layout book & guide.
The little book shows basic layouts such as stair pitch etc..
A square will help you get mostly Do It Yourselfers close if not perfect.
This square is going to be very useful for my future projects such as privacy fencing, wooden shutters, couple of lean-tos, a few concrete pads, & ply projects.
I highly recommend this product.
I have used these squares for years.

Get it Square the first time.

When I bought my first house, we knew we were in for a lot of DIY projects. We could not afford the going rate for renovations in New York City, which is astronomical. The first tool that many handy people suggested to me was a speed square. Being the cheap individual that I am, I picked up a blue plastic one from the local discount tool store and it served me well. But given that it was plastic and tiny, it was hard to read the numbers and missing a few features - good enough, but I outgrew it. 

When I stumbled across this 12 inch Swanson, it appeared to be leagues above the basic one I already owned. Once it arrived, it was confirmed: this thing is amazing. For one, the metal just feels better in your hand. Two, you can see the markings from far away unlike the blue plastic one. Three, it has all these extra scribe marks and Internal measurements, in addition to the regular rulers on the side of the triangle. Plus, it's huge and hard and makes me feel like a real man.

In all seriousness though, this 12 inch one is a little too big if portability is a concern. I would probably keep this one in my garage workshop and use the little one for quick projects. I think the ideal size would be somewhere between the 6 inch blue plastic one that I have and the 12 inch metal one. This isn't heavy at all because it's made of aluminum, but it's just big.

I should also note that I've already learned another trick just from the packaging, which I included a picture of here: you can use this to guide your circular saw and making a straight edge cut, which I never thought to do and which would save me from having a break out my miter saw or tablesaw for tiny cuts. Very neat.

If I were to point out any downsides it's that the aluminum milling give this thing a lot of course, almost sharp, edges. It's enough that I wouldn't want my kid to play with it. Those will probably wear down with time, but they are just a little too sharp for comfort.

The first tool for handy person or DIY fanatic

This is great if you have larger boards to cut that are over 8" wide. Generally they will not fit in a chop saw depending on what you have, it's handy to have a line all they way across the board for a circular saw. The is also a framing square if you do that sort of thing. You can calculate the angles and placement of cuts for rafters and stair stringers. It comes with a book that explains how to use it for that.

Good for Large Boards

12” x 12” Aluminum Swanson Speed Square.
 As a retired master carpenter and cabinet maker I have used a lot of tools and I have for many years used a smaller version of this speed square. They are very handy as a guide for making perfect square cuts plus marking any angle cuts you need to make, like for rafters or steps etc. They are called speed squares (Made by Swanson) for a reason and are much faster than setting up framing squares. This one is a larger version and I have noticed I pick it up more often than the old one I used for so many years. The larger size is a plus. It is aluminum so it will not rust and get hard to read and it is light. Bottom line is I like it a lot and think you will also. Making a nice square cut takes time and a ton of practice but when using this as a guide for your saw the cut will be perfect and fast. It is a very handy tool and will last you a lifetime.

Very easy to use

Pretty straight forward speed square. Excellent quality and it's technically 5 tools in 1! The markings on it are very well detailed and it even comes with a little blue book for roof and stairway layout which can come in very handy. 

And it's made in AMERICA!

Neat high quality 5in1 tool!

I do not spend money to buy something when I can make a reasonable substitute.   I used the Swanson Tool Company 12 Inch Aluminum Speed Square I when I cobbled together a squirrel feeder from scrap lumber.  It was useful in getting the pieces of wood, dug out of the scrap pile, to square it up as best as possible.  The finished condition of the feeder or its appearance IS NOT the fault of the Speed Square.  If I hadn't have used it, it would have looked much worse.  The greedy squirrels don't seem to mind.  

I didn't need to use the Layout Bar.  And the Swanson Blue Box will be a big help the next time I attempt to build any kind of shed or covering.   Maybe this time  I will not have to guess at angles to cut for rafters and peaks.   The Blue Book itself with it's illustrations, explanations, diagrams and tables is worth a lot to me

Very Helpful Set of Tools

I've owned two smaller speed squares in the past and have used them in several projects. However, the most recent time I used them was in building of a porch/deck on my mom's lake house. While they did get the job done, I disliked the fact that they were so small, so I ended up looking for a larger one when I stumbled upon this.

This one's definitely a massive upgrade from those, not just in size, but in features, too. It comes with a book for pointers in things like building stairs, which will come in handy when I repair the stairs on my own deck. It also comes with a layout bar. While I haven't had the chance to use these, I'd rather have them and not need them than vice versa.

This square is 12 inches, is made out of aluminum with a matte finish, which is really nice as you don't have to squint to see the markings if the sun's over you or you have bright light in your work station. The markings are easy to read, and just as accurate as my previous squares as I played around with them to make sure.  One feature this one has that my others don't is the marked notches in 1/4 inch increments.

Next time I have to work on either of the two decks, or anything involving framing, I'm definitely going to get a lot of use out of this one. I'm satisfied with this set and look forward to my next project with it.

Nice for bigger jobs.

This square has a ton of features. Most of which i have no clue how to use but there is a handy guide book to show you how to cut stringers for stairs and guide for roof pitch. The square (triangle) is made from cast aluminum and is rough but it gets the job done.
