yes the thermometer can move up and down to easily read the current temp. Beware though that is only has preset temps, cannot program it for a nonstandard temperature.

Digital is so easy to see. I use this to pasteurize my goats milk and make yogurt.

This worked wonderful for making caramels. It's long design snaps nicely on the side of pan and the digital display with preprogramming worked awesome! Easy to read, plus it beeps at you when you preset the program you want. Best candy thermometer ever! Love it.

I returned it because it was too long. I wanted to use it as a candy thermometer only. I think it is tall to accomodate deep fat frying which I won't be doing. I found a shorter one for candy only. If the measurements had been part of the description, I wouldn't have purchased it. It think it is a great idea but this long should only be used for frying. I'm sure it is a great product. I see that Williams Sonoma has the same one for more money.

The clip to hold it onto the pan is not very sturdy and allows the thermometer to be moved by just the slightest touch when stirring candy. Also it has only preset temps of different candy stages. Doesn't allow you to set your own temp setting. So if you need a temp like 290 you have to set it for soft crack and then wait till it gets to 290. If you set for hard crack it goes off at 300, which is too high of a temp. Returning to store today. Going to buy the other candy thermometer that is listed online.

Candy Thermometer not the best

I used it twice and it worked fine although I had some problems seeing the temps because it fogged up. The third time I tried to use it to make fudge, which needs to reach 234 degrees, it stopped working at 210 degrees. Ruined my fudge. I threw it away.

I bought this product because of the great reviews I read about it.

We used it as soon as we received it and were very happy that it was exactly what we wanted. Unfortunately after a few uses we started noticing scratches on the pan due to the rough edges of the clip. I am not sure if all units have rough edges but I can tell you that it is very annoying if you have expensive cookware.

We were using this thermometer at least twice a week. After only two or three weeks, occasionally it would show the temperature for a few seconds after which the number would start going down and turn off once it gets too low. Then we had to wait a little longer for it to reboot (I guess) and register the correct temperature again and once it did so, it would go down and turn off again. The more we used it the less it turned unreliable. Having this issue here and there in the beginning became the new status quo 6 weeks after the purchase.

I am sure that the defects mentioned above could be fixed easily, but based on my experience with it, I cannot give it a better rating.
