The top bunk is a twin size and the bottom bunk needs a full size mattress. They can both be standard mattresses.

This bed does not require a box spring. If used then the bottom person will have their nose in the top bunks bottom. A combination coil foam would work but simply buy a decent mattress. I did buy a couple sheets of 3/16&quot; subfloor material at HD and had them cut them to size for the top and bottom. This helps distribute the weight across the slats. The bottom has adjustable vertical posts for three slats which are fine for almost anyone using it. But the 3/16 material is less than $9 a sheet. Don&#39;t try to make them exact fits 48 x 72 on the bottom and I think the top cut was 38 x 72. Subfloor/underlayment material is like what you may know as (Door skins)

I&#39;m not sure of the total weight, but once all of the screws and boards are put together correctly, it is a really heavy and sturdy bunk bed. My boys love it.

What type of mattress should be purchased with this bunk bed?

Assembly would go quicker when two people assemble the unit. The instructions are very clear with pictures to assist in assembly.

My nine year old has wanted bunk beds for a few years and we finally agreed to it.  Not wanting to spend too much money on them because we were unsure if he would like them or not, we honestly chose these because of the price and were pleasantly surprised by how well made they were.  

It took two people two hours to put them together and you have to read the instructions and not skip any steps and jump ahead or you will have to "redo" it.  

My son loves them and now all we need is to get cute matching denim comforters!

Cute Bunkbeds!

My girls absolutely love their bunk bed! It is very sturdy. Took my husband and father in law about 3 hours or so to install, only because they didn't read directions correctly and had to start over. (Men, haha) the ladder has flat steps so little ones don't hurt their feet, which is a big plus! The beds I ordered for them were the Linenspa spring and memory foam hybrid mattresses, which are so amazing I've actually slept a couple nights with my girls in their room. Look them up. You won't regret the purchase.

This bed is perfect for small rooms like my sons room..we also have extremely low ceilings and it fits wonderfully. I added the railings to the lower bed for my youngest son but those were not sold with the bed.
