Could not train dog to it

I bought this for my puppy and I could not train him to it. He ended up tearing up the mat. I now use it for my dirty and wet shoes to go on. If my dog did use it I would have like it but I spent weeks training and nothing. My puppy now only uses pee pads inside the house.
