A Poorly Engineered Moka Pot: AVOID!

This moka pot is very light weight and not very sturdy. While it's described as 12 cup, you must keep in mind that it's twelve 2 oz cups. Here's the significant issue that I have with this pot. The water reservoir up to the steam release valve will hold significantly more water than 24 oz. In every other moka pot I own, and I have several in different sizes, the suggested amount of water is just below the steam release. This pot, to the steam release holds 32 oz. of water, but the ground coffee receptacle only holds enough grounds to make twenty ounces of acceptably finished coffee. I experimented with several quantities of water from 16 oz to a maximum of 32 ounces and to get an acceptable strength of coffee, you must only fill the reservoir with from 16 to 20 ounces of water or the finished coffee is weak somewhat coffee flavored tinted water. The engineering of this moka pot fails by that and another significant measure. The holes in the coffee ground receptacle are far too large for an espresso grind of the coffee used. Use an espresso fine grind and the finished coffee will be laden with grounds. In my experimentation, I altered the grind several times to get maximum extraction without getting grinds in the coffee. The finest grind you can use, somewhat successfully, is the medium grind you'll find in a can of commercially ground coffee, like Folgers or Maxwell House. I purchased this moka pot because it is the largest I have found available regardless of price. Had I not thrown away the box, it would be a certain return!
