I saved a little 40+ year old Hackney pony that was so neglected & skinny the slaughter house rejected him several years ago. The plan was to love on him the few short days he was only expected to live & give him a quiet place to die with a full belly.. He found several peppermint nuggets the kids had dropped & gobbled them up before I could get them. Although they are too hard for me to break he has no problems crunching them up with his few remaining teeth.. Although he is now officially retired and loving life just being a pasture puff he spent a couple years with me going to local events & raising awareness of abuse from the slaughterhouse pipelines that many people don't even realize exist.

I have purchased apple wafers as long as they have been around. Each horse gets several in their grain bucket each day and many more as we never come to the barn without a handful of them. We call them cookies and the horses have all learned what a "cookie" is. In fact, if they are out in the arena or run and we just stand there, we may get ignored, but say the word cookie and they all come eagerly to the gate.
