In performance and racing applications. valve spring pressure (open and closed) is one of the most important specs that need to be checked and adjusted during the initial engine build. Even a single quarter-mile run on the drag strip can cause springs to lose their tension in high output engines. Some professional racers check and replace valve springs after every run because even a minimal spring-rate change can mean dramatic results at the race track and the difference between getting the win and second place.
