In this collection of ...

In this collection of poems, zany Christmas songs are set to the tune of traditional Christmas carols. Each song describes everyday feelings and happenings at Christmastime. Events such as trimming the tree, holiday shopping, and being in a Christmas play are explained from a child's point of view. The overall humorous tone will tickle the funny bone and warm the heart. The watercolor illustrations compliment the humorous mood of the entire work and engross children and adults alike until the very last page. My favorite song, "Twim the Twee", describes trimming the tree from an infants point of view. Although the songs are meant to be funny, they relate to people of all ages and have a sense of realism. Because all the poems are from a child's point of view, students may be able to relate to the characters. Students could choose a Christmas carol and write a song that describes their feelings at Christmastime. Younger students could write a single song with the teacher's help and create their own illustrations with their interpretation of the song. Young students could also use the songs to study rhyme. Students will have to opportunity to identify the rhymes alone or as a class with the teacher's help.

In Where Did They Hid...

In "Where Did They Hide My Presents?", there are several cute poems that take place during the Christmas season. "Santa Clause is All Over Town" is a cute poem describing childrens fascination with how Santa delivers gifts so quickly. "Our Friendly Mailman" is a poem about a mailman's job in every season and how they do not keep the packages, but actually deliver them. This is a cute book that would be great to read to children around Christmas. It shows how there are many different people who work together to make Christmas a wonderful day. I would like to read this book to my students in December, and have a postal worker come to describe their job and how mail is transported after reading the poem, "Our Friendly Mailman".

A compilation of silly...

A compilation of silly poetic Christmas-time songs put to well-known Christmas verses. "Toy Catalogs," to the tune of "O Tannenbaum," is a song/poem about a little boy that has so many stacks of catalogs for his Christmas list that if Santa gives him everything he wants he'll have to move into his attic. He protects his catalogs, writes Santa a thirty-nine-page letter, and includes copies of pages with the items he "needs" circled so Santa does not mess up. "Batteries," to the tune of "Silver Bells," is a song/poem about a child that wakes up on Christmas day only to face a grumpy dad that was up all night wrapping presents but forgot to buy batteries to make everything work. Dad tries to go to the store to purchase batteries only to find he needs a car battery too. I enjoyed reading the poems to the tunes I knew. I liked the occasional laugh when remembering what went through my head at Christmas time. The author captured the feelings, moods, and wonderment of the season. Some of the moods/feelings consistently portrayed were: frustration, hectic, hustle, and bustle. In the classroom, I would use this book as a read aloud. I would incorporate a math lesson. Ask the children what their favorite Christmas songs are and have them put a bar graph together for the top five. Then, I would read the poems/songs relating to the top five listed. This would guarantee the tune would be correct and noticeable by the children listening.
