How to Use Western Premium BBQ Products Apple BBQ Cooking Chunks
You can use Western Premium BBQ Products Apple BBQ Cooking Chunks for smoking meats in a variety of ways. They can be used in a charcoal, gas, or electric grill as well as personal and larger smokers.
To use our wood cooking chunks for smoking in a charcoal grill, load your grill with lump charcoal. At Western, we recommend against using briquettes. Light the charcoal using your preferred method; however, we would recommend you avoid using lighter fluid so your meat retains the natural apple smoke flavor. Several minutes prior to cooking, add 3-5 dry apple cooking chunks on a standard grill so they have time to smoke. Add your meat to the grill, close the lid, and smoke until you achieve that great apple smoke flavor. Continue to add wood cooking chunks every 20-30 minutes during your cooking process. Make sure to add more charcoal around every hour to keep your cooking chunks smoking.
If you're using wood cooking chunks for smoking your meats on a gas or electric grill, place dry cooking chunks in a pyramid on top of a solid fire starter leaving an edge exposed. Light the fire starter. Let the cooking chunks burn for 15-20 minutes with the lid and all vents open. If you desire a milder flavor, cook longer. Close the vents and lids, and wait for the flames to subside. Spread the cooking chunks evenly on the grill, and add your food. Close the lid and let the meat absorb that delicious apple smoke flavor.
If you're using a smoker instead of the grill, follow the manufacturer's instructions for smoking meat. Keep adding our apple cooking chunks throughout the smoking process. Once you've achieved the flavor you desire, quit adding cooking chunks and enjoy your hard-earned apple smoked meats.

great mild flavor to ribs and chicken
As a long time smoker of ribs and chicken i have mostly used hickory chips. i was reading about fruit woods and chunks and gave this a try. i soak this wood 1st then add to my hot coals. it gives a great smoky flavor but is more mild in flavor and gives me no heartburn like hickory can sometimes. i also love the chunks. they last longer then chips and are so easy to throw 1 or 2 chunks on the coals that provide a long time of smoke. i highly recommend to beginners or long time smokers.

Today we grilled meats using this. It was difficult to get started. It took 30 minutes to get lit using a torch. Once going, it smoked alot. It's more for small bonfires. It ashed easily and caused alot of soot more than the end of a bonfire. It's quite expensive for the amount you get. Perhaps next time i shall try the wood chips instead.
