The water is pumped up from the base to the top and into the vortex tunnel. When the water fills the vortex tunnel it flows over and then falls down into water pool and then falls over ledge to bottom pool creating a smooth and tranquil flow of water.   You can easily add water as needed by just filling up the bottom pool no need to open up back and fill basin.
