no gap here
We just had this installed recently, and there is no excessive gap between the escutcheon and the handle. I would say what we got matches what the Moen website shows.

doesn't look like photo when installed
This is for the Moentrol option. It looks good but the handle sticks out further than the photos on the site represent, so aesthetically speaking I personally think it looks a little off. I installed this on an old standard valve which might be part of the problem. It looks fine but would look better if it didn't have an inch of stop tube showing when turned off. Functionally it works fine, but the way the handle is attached to the valve (one screw from the bottom) allows it to pivot left and right which happens when you push and pull the handle to turn it on/off. Not a big deal now as it's not loose, but if it does happen to loosen up in the future it will be an annoyance. Overall it's better than any other options stylistically for a new trim kit that I had available to me that would work with this valve.
