At the beginning, I felt "lost" until towards the middle of the season and towards the end when I could understand what the producers, writers, actors/actresses, & so forth were communicating which to me was making the world chaotic actually chaotic in the U S. Sort of trying to make sense out of the day-to-day struggles in life, in an actual real life, down to earth, average person's perspective including the choice of words, even swear words. The Leftovers emulates death of a loved one(s), but there was no death. Only the question, "Where are they?" Also, in The Leftover's S2, is the main character, "Kevin" dead, in "purgatory", a dream state, or what? I hope The Leftovers S3 picks up where Season 1 left off, especially with bringing a hint on what really occurred, even in theory, or possibly the departed ones returning. Ironically when something is good but the ratings drop, so does the show and sometimes before ending the show with a good closure, tying up all the loose ends nicely.
