Someday When I Am Bigger (Paperback)

This whimsical picture book explores the trials, experiences and feelings of children who are short or not growing well. As told by a child narrator, he relates how he would interact with short kids in a positive way. He identifies the many problems that small children face including stigmatization and bullying. As the story progresses, we discover that he indeed is a small individual who is coming to terms with his stature and recognizing his self-worth. While noting that he may need medicine to grow, if indeed his shortness has a medical basis, he realizes that size is not the most important factor that defines him as a person. Ideally a book for a parent to read with their child, it explores the experiences that some kids may never have relayed to their parents. Quite often in school children are asked to line up by size. In the schoolyard, kids are picked for teams and play based on size. Rides at amusement parks have size restrictions. Words and experiences can be hurtful. Identifying these feelings can help children explore and explain their own experiences and open a dialogue with their parents, sibs, teachers and friends.
