Phosphate free is the problem. I have answer

I have been an appliance tech in Arizona for 15 years. Our water is very hard and white film on dishes is a daily service call. Used to be able to direct customers to Cascade Complete Powder because of the high phosphate content to soften the water. Yes, P/G, phosphates DO soften water. So, unless you live in a place with naturally soft water, or spend the bucks on a softener your options are now limited... there is hope however. There is a product on the market, I won't use the name because its not a PG product. But it is sold in the same soap isle usually near the rinse aid. It comes in a yellow water bottle shape and has a picture of a Lemon on it. It is a natural citric acid based product that you can 50/50 with any enzyme based powder soap. This product works very well, and will even remove existing film already on dishes (unless the new soap as already etched the glass). I promise this will resolve your problem. I have read all previous reviews, and even the PG responses, and can't believe the help they are offering. The problem IS lime and calcuim from the hard water. Nothing to do with rinse aid. All the rinse aid does is put a sheeting action over your dishes to help with drying and won't do anything but seal in the film. Please, PG, please stop giving incorrect advise. If you have a water softener and are still having the same problem, have your water tested, as your water softener is probably in need of service. Until they reinstate phosphates or some other water softening agent into the detergent, this is the best we can do. Hope this helps.

Thanks for your expertise and trying to help other Cascade consumers. Our products did recently undergo a formulation change to comply with state and local legislations that require ALL brands of automatic dishwasher detergents contain no phosphate. This is currently a permanent mandated change. Our Cascade products are formulated to deliver the excellent performance that you have come to expect. However, as you mentioned, water hardness and other factors may sometimes have an effect on cleaning. In hard water situations, Cascade All in 1 Pacs or Action Pacs tend to give better results. While I can’t comment on the other product you mention that we don’t make, I can say that we have tested our Rinse Aids extensively and they do help when filming is a problem. Also, I did want to mention that “etching” appears to result from an unusual combination of factors including water supply (occurs more often in soft water), heat, type of glass, and how glass was manufactured, not from detergent, regardless of brand. I personally have not had a problem while using just my Cascade Complete Powder without phosphates. Thanks again for trying to help our Cascade consumers!

white residue on dishes

The box says 'rinses away residue, leaves dishes sparkiling' - not true. The residue is particularly bad on stainless and plastic. I am a long-time Cascade buyer - this is the first and last time I will buy the one with Dawn, lemon scent. I hope the other Cascade varieties don't leave the same residue.

Thanks for you loyalty to Cascade. The residue you are reporting may be caused by the combination of hard water and the newly reformulated phosphate free Cascade. Starting in 2010 new state and local legislations require that all automatic dishwasher detergents contain no phosphate. So we removed phosphates to comply. Here's how to remove film from your dishes: 1.Fill both detergent cups with white vinegar and run one wash cycle without adding detergent. 2.REMOVE ALL METAL ITEMS from the dishwasher first and wash them by hand. (Vinegar is too acidic for metal items, but is safe for stainless steel dishwasher interiors.) Then run the glasses/dishes through an entire cycle with no detergent. 3.Run through another cycle, using Cascade to remove any vinegar residue. Tips to prevent this in the future: *Try Action Pacs or All in 1 Pacs. *Add a rinse aid like Cascade Crystal Clear. *Water temperature should be at least 120 degrees F. Run hot water at kitchen sink before starting the cycle. *To prevent low water pressure, run dishwasher when no other water is being used (showers, grass watering, washing machine). Hope you find this information helpful.
