I've been using this to crush my dog's medicine. It gets them all the way to a powder, making it easy to mix into my dog's snack.

At first I thought it might be a little larger than needed-I just wanted to crush or grind herbs, and not have them fly all over when I pressed down on the hard seed types or branches of things like rosemary, but was rarely going to be working on more than a couple of teaspoonfuls at a time. I do not have room for storing unnecessarily large items. especially heavy ones. Actually this set is perfect. Just the size and shape that works for me without bits of herbs or seeds flying around, not a huge container to bve scraping for just a dab of herbs. Since these mortars and pestles are stone, they are usually heavy for their size, so the smallest that works is best for me. The pestle iis shaped differently than many, but I like it and find it very comfortable to use. Hopefully, the fact that it is thicker than some will prevent it cracking as some say theirs in other long oval styled ones have- after all, you are just pressing on it, not slamming it around in the bowl of the mortar. The outsides are very smooth and polished, while the inside of the mortar have just a faint roughness as does the bottom of the pestle, so they work nicely at grinding while being omfortable to hold on to. It is also very pleasing to look at if I want to leave it sitting on the counter rather than put away in a cupboard, and other people find it interesting. I got the black one, which goes nicely in my kitchen and has just a little pattern visible in the rock.
