I highly recommend this attachment if you have a shag rug. A must have. But understand you still need to vacuum with a flat attachment or other vacuum without rotator. This attachment gently but effectively keeps the rug in good condition. When I'm in a hurry I will only use it but the opening is too small to get much coverage to pull up much debris.

I don't have shag carpet but I live in an RV in a Sandy area. This rake does an excellent job of getting my dog's hair loosened enough to vacuum. The rake bristles are stiff enough to loosen and raise the nap in the carpet. I had to use my initial attachment to get all the sand and dirt picked up. However, I believe it would do an excellent job on shag.
