Primula malacoides is commonly called Fairy Primrose, and they are perennials in frost-free climates and grown as annuals in colder zones. This variety has white blossoms that are whorled around a leafless stem. The stems can have dozens of flowers that remain for weeks. Fairy Primrose can be used for early spring color either in beds or in containers. They are lovely when planted in mass groupings. Fairy Primrose also makes a nice flowering houseplant. If seeds are started in mid-summer, the plant will have blooms from December – March when the spent blooms are deadheaded regularly. Start Fairy Primrose seed indoors in early winter for early spring transplants. Cover the seed lightly with peat moss and keep the seed moist. With a temperature range of 64 – 72F, germination is usually in 28 days. Space the plants 8 inches apart. Grow Fairy Primrose in partial shade and in moist, well-drained, humus-rich soil. Fairy Primrose usually is resistant to deer.
