Fast F2.8 APS-C standard zoom

Sony’s first 16-55 mm (24–82.5 mm full-frame equiv.) APS-C zoom with a constant F2.8 aperture is remarkably compact while offering performance befitting the G Lens series. A new optical design delivers excellent corner-to-corner resolution, and beautiful bokeh is available when needed. It is compact, lightweight, and ideal for a wide range of subjects.

High resolution throughout the zoom range, even at F2.8

Two AA (advanced aspherical) and two aspherical elements suppress aberration for outstanding corner-to-corner G Lens resolution, while three ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements reduce color bleeding to a minimum. Sony’s original Nano AR Coating adds superior resistance to flare and ghosting for crisp contrast. Precise spherical aberration control and a 9-blade circular aperture contribute to smooth bokeh.

Compact, lightweight, and bright

Optimized mechanical and optical design achieve a weight of just 17.5 oz (494 grams) in a compact, constant F2.8 16-55 mm (24-82.5 mm full-frame equiv.) zoom lens. This fine lens is ideal for everything from portraits to everyday snapshots, combining with compact E-mount bodies to form a highly mobile, manageable system for a wide range of photographic applications.

XD Linear Motor for fast, precise AF and tracking

The same type of advanced XD (extreme dynamic) linear motor that maximizes focus performance in G Master series lenses is employed in this APS-C lens. The XD Linear Motor fully utilizes the speed potential of the camera body, focusing on and tracking even fast-moving subjects with outstanding speed and precision. Operation is also quiet, allowing videographers to take advantage of the constant F2.8 aperture.

Professional control and reliability

A customizable focus hold button, AF/MF mode switch, and Linear Response MF add control versatility and precision that can help get the shot even in difficult, changing conditions. The front lens element is fluorine coated to repel water and grime, and the lens is dust and moisture resistant so that that it can be used with confidence in challenging outdoor environments.

Smooth, beautiful bokeh

Spherical aberration has a large effect on bokeh quality, and is precisely controlled to deliver smooth, attractive bokeh in out-of-focus areas. A 9-blade circular aperture also contributes to this lens’s beautiful bokeh. Sharp in-focus detail contrasts with luscious background bokeh for deep, impressive imagery.

Crisp contrast

Sony’s original Nano AR Coating creates a precise, regular nanostructure on lens surfaces that does not interfere with light transmission while suppressing reflections that can cause flare and ghosting. Internal reflections are reduced to an absolute minimum, achieving outstanding clarity and contrast.

Customizable focus hold button

A focus hold button on the lens barrel is conveniently positioned for easy focus hold control. The button can also be customized via a camera menu that allows assignment of other functions, such as Right/Left Eye Select, as required.

Focus mode switch

A focus mode switch that allows instant switching between auto and manual focus mode can be a great advantage when shooting subjects or situations that require fine manual focus adjustment.

Linear Response MF

Sony’s Linear Response MF feature ensures that the focus ring responds directly and linearly to subtle control when focusing manually. Focus ring rotation translates ...

Perfect travel lens!

I used to travel with the Sigma Trio for Sony APS-C: 16mm, 30mm, 56mm F/1.4 and the quality was amazing. However, being the heavy traveler that I am (up to 6 continents this year, yes, I said continents, not countries!) I need something more travel friendly. Switching between 3 primes was just soooo annoying. This 16-55mm G lens gives me just as good as image quality and now the extra convenience. Also for travel, I found myself shooting a lot of environmental portraits at F/2.8 - F/5.6. For example if the background is too blurred (i.e. Eiffel Tower or the Egyptian pyramids) then it doesn't show the beautiful scenery. Therefore I am not missing out much on the Sigma's F/1.4 at all. Now all I need is for Sony to make a APSC super wide angle zoom version 2 (update the Sony E 10-18mm f/4 to a GM or G series!)

Stunning crystal clear sharp corner 2 corner photo

Yes its expensive....but worth every penny. If you own the Sigma 16mm this lens is about the same weight and length. It has amazing sharpness, color, clarity, contrast...I can go on and on. I'm very happy with my purchase and you will be too.

This is one spectacular APSC lens

I do mostly video with an FX-30. I expected I would use my motorized 18-105 f/4 APSC zoom G-lens more because of the extra zoom factor and the motor, an use the 16-55 for beauty stills or special shots. But instead I use this all the time. The 18-105 just does not focus close enough and you can't beat the 2.8 aperture. I wish they'd offer a motorized zoom version of this, but I guess they can't fit the motor.
