they are short sticks and you will need the free holder that comes with it because it does not have a bottom stick. The whole stick is full of incense so the porcelain little holder helps hold it and uses the majority of the stick so you don't lose any of it. Just don't make a mistake and throw out the little holder like I did. I ordered more but it's worth it. Very nice
