when my kids were between 8-12, they had 1 box (18 pieces) and played to no end creating various objects. one of my grandsons whose is 12 surprised me as to wanting several boxes for this xmas. Although normally priced fairly, Walmart had offered a 63% savings. Talk about timing and luck, I bought 4 boxes to distribute to several grandkids. They are having ball learning to build whatever they can imagine. I would recommend 2 boxes as 1 box is limiting to structures.
