goldfinches love it, and it can be refilled!

I've tried many thistle seed feeders, and this one that I will continue to use. My dozen goldfinches love it, and it contains enough seed to last 1-3 weeks for the ones who prefer to cling. I have one feeder pole with 3 feeders dedicated to goldfinches, as they never feed alongside the other birds. One pole hanger arm has 2 of these socks hanging side by side so that more clinging goldfinches have room to feed. Some goldfinches are attracted more to this sock than to my other 2 perch tube feeders, as some prefer to cling, while others prefer to perch. This sock is very sturdy, and has nice small holes so that nyger thistle seed doesn't fall in a pile to the ground, unlike Walmart's Perky Pet sock feeder which has a seed filled baffle at the top, but the sock holes are too large and seed falls in huge piles of waste on the ground, and it also was torn too easily by the finches. This sock is the perfect replacement. It's a bit pricey compared to an 8lb bag of thistle, but it can be refilled so it's a good value. With rain in Chicago, this sock will eventually have to be replaced when it becomes discolored, but it should last for at least a month. I haven't had any problem with mold despite frequent rainy periods recently after the summer/fall draught. It seems to air out the seed pretty well. For nyger/thistle, this is a great feeder. If you prefer to use the specialty mixed seeds which "attract more finches" and contain thistle, millet, canary, and sunflower chip seeds, I don't think you can use this sock for refills as the holes are only large enough for thistle seed. I have mixed finch seed in tube feeders on a separate pole for my clan of house finches and sparrows, and other feeders used for sunflower and suet. Separation of hanger poles allows goldfinches to feed in peace.
