Not good with diabetic cat

I wrote a review about the Fresh Step Crystals and how the usage went from great to awful. I have a cat who's battled diabetes. Even though her sugar is low she's still drinking a lot of water and her kitty litter usage shows. I purchased this stuff because of all the great reviews and is disappointed. Very disappointed. This stuff only lasted 7 days. I had to change this today and as you can see from the pictures I took this litter was completely soaked after 6.5 days from one cat. It began to smell as well. I don't know what kitty litter to use because they're all reacting the same. What use to last me from 3-4 weeks with daily cleaning is now lasting 3-7 days. Even though this litter is cost effective, I would have to buy 48 of these just to last a year and at $5 a bag rounded off, it's very expensive!

I began using this litter several years ago and was highly impressed with its ability to knock out odors so well. It works as described but saying it last a month is a bit of a stretch, with one cat I get about 20 days out of a bag with no odor. Adding a diabetic cat, he can take out a box with this in about half the time. Bottom line is your mileage may vary, be realistic. Problem I am encountering recently is that I can't spend days hunting this down. Currently there seems to be a limit of four bags shipped online which is extremely inconvenient and eliminates the possible benefit of free shipping. Stores that previously stocked it no longer do and stores I manage to find it in will have limited stock. I have at times gone store to store trying to find it only to find 2-3 bags. Keep in mind these are 4 pound bags, and only available in 4 pound bags, I imagine the majority of loyal consumers would likely buy several to keep on hand. If you can find it.. buy as many as you can.

Best price on crystal litter

I just found this litter and ive been using it for about a month. This is the best price per pound that I've found for crystal litter anywhere. The 4 lb. bag doesn't last a month as they claim it will for a single cat and I wouldn't expect it to since that is the same claim made by companies that sell the 8 lb. bags. It's the same material so it makes sense to me that pound for pound it would absorb the same amount of moisture so half the weight would absorb half the moisture. I prefer the smaller bags that don't last as long though because I would rather have fresh litter more often anyway. I live in a one bedroom condo with two cats and I change the litter and use a fresh bag once a week. This kind of litter is great for cutting down on the urine smell. Also, these crystals are smaller in size than most other crystal brands so there is more dust, but it's still much less dust than clay litters, and the smaller crystals are softer so picky cats will probably like this better.

I bought this after trying the Fresh Step crystals. Definitely a better price for this litter. I have four cats (3 girls and a boy), that share three jumbo pans. I clean them multiple times a day and make sure to stir all the litter. I smell feces for about a minute when they leave the box and never smell urine. In my opinion it is not dusty and there is no added fragrance, which I like as sometimes it can be over powering. It also scoops easier than Fresh Step due to the crystals being a little bit smaller. My cats don't track it nearly as much as they did with other clumping brands(Tidy Cats and Fresh Step). Another plus is that it is a lot lighter to carry. This brand doesn't have as much blue coloring as Fresh Step, if the dye bothers you. Maybe just my cats, but no one was picky and as soon as I was filling the boxes they were right in them. It is a small bag, but maybe it's good to always have a fresh supply to open? All in all, I'm glad I bought it to try, I won't switch back.... coming from the woman who would never use anything but Tidy Cats!

As of late I'm finding it very hard to maintain my cat's kitty litter. I went from Tidy Cat to Fresh Step. I stopped using Tidy Cat because my cat's litter would only last about a week or so and then I would have to change it. This included daily cleaning. I switched to Fresh Step because the litter would last 3-4 weeks with daily cleaning. I then went to the Fresh Step Crystals and the first time I used it the litter lasted 5 weeks with daily cleaning. In May of this year I've been finding myself changing my cat's litter every few days now because her urine doesn't dry. It will soak up the whole box causing the odor to arise fast. I went back to the Fresh Step rocks and the same thing is happening. I don't know why this is. I've gone through three bags of Fresh Step Crystals within two months and I'm running out of the regular litter. I've tried the Arm & Hammer Litter Deoderizer which use to work and that's fruitless. Is there anything that I can use to help keep my cat's litter dry? The description of this litter says one bag last a month. I see one person who's going through what I'm going through and is wondering if this works.

  • A. We went ahead and just started changing every two weeks right off the bat. Still ended up being cheaper than clay littler. So we change it every two weeks whether we think it needs it or not.

  • A. When I first got it, I could go about a month, but then I bought my cat a water fountain and she started drinking a lot more water so now it last 2 weeks. You have to stir it around regularly so that the crystals can air dry a bit so that the urine doesn't just sit at the bottom. Best cat litter ever.

  • A. I have a different situation than you, but honestly, I can't see this litter, or any litter for that matter, lasting a whole month. Vets recommend that you have one litter box for each cat, plus one extra. I have three cats, so that would have been a bit too expensive for me. I have three Scoop Free automatic litter boxes, and they recommend Fresh Step crystals. Fresh Step and Scoop Free both say that the crystals will last "up to" a month, but mine never lasted anywhere near that long. The most I ever got was about two weeks. So, I was using 6-9 bags of Fresh Step crystals a month for my three boxes, and the cost was just prohibitive. That's why I switched to the Mimi Crystals. They work just about as well as the Fresh Step crystals, in my opinion, and the cost is about half as much. I generally change litter once a week now on two of the boxes. The third box doesn't seem to be as much of a favorite, so it can go a full two weeks before needing to be changed. So, in regards to your question, Mimi works about as well as Fresh Step, though certainly not any better. You might get two weeks use before it needs changing, but I expect you'll find that it probably needs changing after a week to ten days. Also, just in case, you might want to discuss this issue with your vet. It's possible that it may not be the litter that has changed, but your cat's urine, indicating that there is a health issue that is responsible fore the change. Wouldn't hurt. Best of luck

  • A. I have an 8 year old cat who poops once a day and pees twice a day (sorry if that grossed you out). I find the litter only lasts 7 days and by the 6th day it will not absorb more urine. I scoop at LEAST twice a day...I scoop in the morning before I leave for work again at night before I go to bed. I scoop out the solids and bag them for the trash and stir and mix the urine..but still by the end of the week I need to empty out the entire box. I don't understand how people are saying one bag lasts them a month with TWO cats when it lasts me 7 days for ONE cat. Granted, I live in a tiny apartment and the litter box is in my bathroom.....which is in my bedroom..but I still don't understand how you guys do it.

  • A. I am a Walmart Associate & I love this litter. It is the BEST I have ever used & I have owned many kitties in my lifetime. I now own 3 and with this many kitties using it, NO it will not last a month. It does last lots longer and controls odor better than any other litter. Since I have 3 using it all at once, I think it lasts well for about 10 days to 2 weeks. If you just have 1 kitty, it may last up to a month. My store just quit carrying it and I am super disappointed about it. I have tried using others since I 1st began using Mimi and I am never happy with them & always go back to it. It will be worth it for me to "Think Ahead" from now on and order it on-line, since I cannot get it in the store where I work. It is also very lightweight & my kitties seem to like it best. <<^..^>> GET IT & Clean it daily and you won't be sorry. I use a litter mat in front of each of their litter boxes and I hardly ever see them track any around my home (or very little) & there is NO DUST Whatsoever!

  • A. I haven't had mine a month, however I have already found out in the 10 days I've used it that is fantastic! I foster kittens until a home can be found and have 2 litterboxes. As an experiment I used this litter in one and a clumping/scoopable litter in the other. I've had to completely change the litter in the clumping box 3 times (and that's with multiple daily scooping). The Mimi litter with daily scooping hasn't had to be replaced and it doesn't smell.

I bought this for the first time and I see the directions say to rake it. Do I rake just the top or mix in the wet greenish-yellow color from the bottom? I've read 2 different views on this and would like more input please. Thank you.
by elynnjean 1/14/2014

  • A. The whole point of stirring it up is to mix the used litter in with the good. That helps control the odor and makes it last longer. Most cats have a tendency to use a certain spot in the box. You need to get the new stuff to where it will be used. Also, the fresh litter will help absorb urine (and its smell) that settles to the bottom of the box.

  • A. ALL of it. TO work properly you MUST stir the litter or you will get a big mess on the bottom of the pan. When you stir it, just make certain that you scrape the litter on the bottom so it stays dry. Much easier on replacement day. I just open the trash bag and pour it in. Rarely have to clean the bottom of the pan because I do this every time I clean out the pan.

  • A. Yes, the greenish color is the litter that has started absorbing urine. You dont want to oversaturate the litter, causing urine pools, so you do want to make sure you rake it from the bottom and mix all the litter (saturated and unsatuated) together. this will make the littler last as long as possible.
